Emerging Architect of the Year, commended

This ingenious two-storey timber-framed house cleverly exploits a small infill site. The first space is a modest yard with a utility/workshop area. A small study separates the yard from a garden articulated by a diagonal path to the main building.

Two further spaces allow light to the open plan ground floor, part of which can act as dining area or second bedroom. Upstairs, the principal bedroom has a view over the rear gardens of adjoining houses. The simple materials combine with white rendered walls to give a playfulness and clarity to the design. Detailing of sills, windows and cement sheet cladding are executed elegantly and effortlessly.
