Best on Show: What was your building of the year?

Since Covid put paid to the RIBA awards this year, we invited readers to nominate their favourite building in each region from the shortlist that would normally have ended with the Stirling Prize, see below for links to the results page

If there was a vote for the most unexpected year 2020 would probably win it. But as an architecture magazine we thought we would stick to a vote on buildings.

You have voted on the best buildings of each nation and region from Scotland to the South West and everywhere between. For the results see here

The RIBA Awards, and those of RIAS, RSAW and RSUA, have been one casualty of the surprises of 2020, the jury visits that are their hallmark of quality cancelled due to the coronavirus. While they are going ahead next year – in a modified form as RIBA President Alan Jones explains here – until then we wanted to celebrate the best of a great crop the pre-pandemic buildings.

In June the RIBA Journal published the shortlists of great buildings around the country. Now, in this informal poll, we are finding out which you think are the best in each region. People have voted in every region, perhaps for their own buildings but also for the ones they walked past on their daily lockdown walk and the one near their granny’s house or that one they have studied in detail, wondering how the architects did it.

You can still look at the regional awards shortlists by clicking on the links below.

Voting closed 6pm, Wednesday 9th December.
