One of the most important things in home design is integrating flow within the layout. Positioning has a significant impact on the movement and feel of the overall space, whether it’s open plan, closed or broken plan divided by structural elements.

The kitchen sink area, or water hub, is often overlooked during renovations, but it holds so much potential to tie together the complete look and feel of the space.

German manufacturer Blanco has made it its mission to increase the functionality and enjoyability of the water hub area.

Incorporating a Blanco Unit into any kitchen maximises storage space while keeping everything organised and neatly contained. This design not only frees up valuable worktop space, but also eliminates the need for freestanding bins that can disrupt a kitchen's flow.

For me, simplicity is everything, from the overall design of a home to the way a chopping board fits perfectly in the sink. When something is simple and functional, it creates a clean, timeless aesthetic that brings balance and ease to the kitchen environment.

Effective details, such as lowering windowsills for seamless glazing so you can easily look out onto the garden, adding window seats and integrating shelves for recipe books, are simple yet impactful ways of adding character and functionality, creating an inviting atmosphere that feels stylish, lived-in and uniquely personal.

Focus in on storage

Storage, alongside flow and light, is one of my key design standards, particularly in kitchens.

Blanco offers efficient storage solutions, including easily accessible bins for waste and recycling, ensuring everything is within reach while keeping the space tidy. The Blanco Choice drinks system and under-cabinet solutions further enhance this by providing seamless organisation at the water hub.

Smart solutions, including the Orga shelf, flat drawer and Combi 40/1 bin, can transform the often-cluttered under-sink area to create a user-friendly experience while incorporating waste management and storage.

During renovations, I always consider the storage potential of pantries, islands and cupboards. A small sink to facilitate a quick clean-up and a Blanco Choice drinks system to cater for hot and cold drink needs are perfect for incorporating into an island, allowing for storage cupboards underneath and saving countertop space. These elements contribute to kitchen efficiency and promote a seamless flow.

As an architect, having a variety of choices to accommodate diverse kitchen styles and client tastes is essential. The options available with Blanco make the kitchen water hub the pivotal element of a kitchen design that forms the heart of a client's home.
