The Hotel Löwen in Schruns in the Austrain state of Vorarlbergis sits in the impressive mountainous landscape of the Montafon valley.

In 2022, the management team at the hotel commissioned a programme of expansion works that included an upgrade to an outdoor terrace.

The brief was to provide all-year weather protection across an area large enough to seat 100 guests and visitors that would enhance the space and extend outdoor dining into the evening and beyond the summer months.

The client chose the Pergola Stretch awning system from German shading solutions manufacturer Markilux to provide protection from sun, rain and wind. The awning features an innovative, space-saving folding fabric cover that runs along the two track-guided support profiles.

'We developed a shading concept with a local specialist dealer alongside the architects and interior designers responsible for the hotel project,' explains Markilux project manager Jan Kattenbeck.

The tailor-made awning design they came up with covers 165 square metres and is made up of five separate units.

The awnings were configured to blend with the architecture and appearance of the hotel. The streamlined modern design looks as if it has been cast from a single mould and the frame colour matches the wooden elements and balconies of the main building, enhancing the terrace.

Vertical roller blinds were installed on the awnings and on the front of one window. These can be lowered to protect against glare when the sun is low and, along with integrated LED lighting, help create a pleasant atmosphere in the evening.

Thanks to a successful collaboration all round, the installation took just one week, with Markilux's expert service team on hand to support throughout. The awning system has increased the hotel's dining capacity and also encourages guests to linger longer outdoors.

'The smooth conclusion of the Hotel Löwen project represents success for both us and a very happy customer,' says Kattenbeck.
