A glazing solution so beautiful you only see the view

Hope Villa's serene atmosphere and unique sense of place is rooted in the architect's sliding door specification

Hope Villa is a terraced property in Southwark, south east London. In 2023 a refurbishment and extension project was carried out by local practice Proctor & Shaw.

The brief was to achieve a super sustainable home for knowledgeable homeowners who had carried out their own initial energy-saving retrofit 10 years earlier.

At the heart of Hope Villa is an open-plan kitchen and dining area with large sliding doors supplied by Acton-based architectural glazing specialist Maxlight.

Throughout the day, light illuminates the dining area, highlighting the warmth of the timber finishes and creating an ever-changing play of shadow and sunlight on the textured surfaces.

The doors are more than just a functional feature – they frame the courtyard garden and draw nature into the internal space.

Specifying Maxlight at Hope Villa

The sliding doors are fundamental to the feel of the property and helped the architects realise their vision for a sustainable home that doesn’t compromise on atmosphere or character.

With their generous scale and minimal sightlines, the doors allow the dining room to open entirely to the outdoors, reinforcing the house's connection to its green surroundings.

Maxlight sliding doors improve thermal performance and encourage natural ventilation. They also elevate everyday moments – a morning coffee or a family meal – by grounding them in light, air and the rhythm of the seasons.

The Hope Villa project is a reminder that sustainable design can be subtle as well as striking and great architecture isn’t always about size, but about how a space makes you feel.
