This graphite-impregnated foam compresses under deflection; when exposed to heat, it creates a highly expansive char with excellent firestopping properties
All buildings are subject to movement from a variety of sources.
Movement of the critical building services that support safety and functionality is typically caused by live loads on a single area of the structure, which causes the floor level to deflect downwards and the ceiling height on the floor below to decrease.
Assuming the critical building services are attached to the underside of soffits, when the soffits move, the services move and they are very likely to pass through walls beneath the designed deflection area.
This movement type has the potential to apply undesired stress to services and any constructed fire seal around those services.
The innovation
Nullifire's patented Graphite eXpansion Technology FZ400 is a graphite-impregnated open-cell foam that, when exposed to heat, creates a highly expansive char with excellent firestopping properties. It is wrapped in a water-resistant film providing a cold smoke seal.
FZ400 is flexible enough to accommodate potential movement, providing relief of fatigue on firestopping seals.
Under deflection, once fitted around the seal, the foam compresses to accommodate the movement, protecting the integrity of the service penetration and keeping the fire seal and compartmentation intact.
FZ400 is easily installed manually. It can be compressed and fitted around the three sides of the seal in a wall that has been firestopped with other Nullifire products.
When tested to EN 1366-3/4, FZ400 achieved up to two hours fire rating after cyclic movement.
'The development and success of this test will be well received in the construction industry where architects and main contractor clients demand data-driven solutions,' says Nullifire technical manager Hannah Eyres.
More reasons to specify FZ400
- Nullifire patented GXT Technology with excellent firestopping properties.
- Can be fitted retrospectively.
- Unique Movement Test - wall lifted up and down by 30mm over 50 times in four hours and then fire tested.
- When tested to EN 1366-3/4, achieved up to two hours fire rating.
Nullifire has been supplying firestopping and intumescent coatings to the construction industry for over 50 years. It has extensive knowledge and the technical expertise to develop best-in-class firestopping products.
FZ400 should be used in conjunction with other Nullifire firestopping products.
