Modernity meets heritage: Victorian Sliders' award-winning ECOSlide windows at Epsom College in Surrey.

Epsom College in Surrey was founded as a school for the children of doctors who had been orphaned or were living in poverty. Built in 1853, it was opened by Prince Albert and his son, the future King Edward VII, two years later.

In the decades since, its grand Gothic Revival buildings have housed and educated tens of thousands of pupils. It is now an independent co-educational school for 11 to 18-year-olds.

Come the 2020s, Epsom College's timber sash windows were showing their age. Draughty and inefficient, they were no longer effectively holding in heat, leading to discomfort for students and staff and increased energy bills for the college.

Additionally, the ageing timber frames required regular maintenance to keep them weatherproof and looking their best.

This presented a unique challenge: how to preserve the college's historic character while delivering 21st century energy efficiency.

ECOSlide sash windows: marrying modernity and heritage

Victorian Sliders' ECOSlide PVCu sash windows are designed to replicate the aesthetic appeal of traditional timber sashes. At Epsom College, 280 were installed.

From the elegant run-through sash horns to Georgian or astragal bars, the windows have configuration options that allow them to blend with existing architecture.

However, unlike timber, ECOSlide’s modern PVCu construction offers superior weather resistance, durability and low maintenance. This not only reduces the long-term costs associated with window replacement, but also ensures the windows will continue to look their best for decades to come.

Epsom College: 5 benefits of ECOSlide sash windows

  • Aesthetic and functional appeal The windows maintain the historical look of the buildings while improving functionality. Features include spring balances for smooth and effortless sliding, toughened glass and travel restrictors for enhanced safety and innovative tilt functionality for easy cleaning.

  • Maintenance and durability Unlike timber, PVCu ECOSlide windows require minimal upkeep and offer superior resistance to weathering. This has reduced the long-term costs associated with window replacement and maintenance.

  • Energy efficiency The superior thermal insulation of ECOSlide windows has significantly reduced heating costs, making classrooms warmer in winter and cooler in summer. This not only improves comfort for students and staff, but also contributes to the College's environmental sustainability efforts.

ECOslide sash windows can be configured to meet a range of heritage specifications and have been accepted for use in some conservation areas in the UK.

A winner of three National Fenestration Awards, Victorian Sliders is committed to providing high-quality, sustainable solutions that ensure the character of historic buildings endures for years to come.
