Thames Tower, bang in the middle of Reading, could have been just another office building and once it was: this new structure replaces an older Thames Tower, a stumpy and outdated 1970s office block. The development team didn’t demolish the building, though, but stripped it back to its original concrete frame and then completely reimagined both interior and the exterior.

With creative engineering they also managed to add another four floors.  All the embodied energy in the concrete has been preserved, and yet the resulting building is so pristine in form and the interior spaces so light and open that it is hard to believe that it is not completely new. The Phoenix-like Thames Tower also distinguishes itself through the huge contribution it makes to the public realm, and the refined purity of its architecture.
