This refurbishment of part of Chamberlin Powell and Bon’s grade II listed Golden Lane Estate was carried out with the tenants in situ. Partway through, in response to the Grenfell tragedy, the scope of work was extended. Originally a replacement of the deteriorating cladding system, it now had to include detailed consideration of the fire performance of the facade. The problem-solving approach of the architect is evident at every stage of this project. It is an enormously competent restoration which is a benchmark against which the future cladding and reinvigoration of this type of postwar building will be measured.
