113-115 Ouseburn Road is an exemplar for contemporary living where resources are shared to create a template for sustainable accommodation. It responds to needs of people wanting to downsize but stay local and considers how homes can adapt to an ageing population. The architect was initially approached by a homeowner looking to divide the site of their existing house, release capital and create a bespoke home for retirement.

Their neighbour then joined them. The two houses are designed by the same team and constructed through a shared building contract to create the best value for both owners. They share light wells as well as external spaces. The resulting project sits perfectly on the site, using level changes to maximise daylight while creating privacy through louvres. The buildings are modest in size but optimise the space and are beautifully detailed. They make the most of a tight budget that had to mitigate for former mining works under the site.
