Elfin Kitchens has supplied 117 Economy Plus (B-100-sMos-K) kitchens to Poulson House - a newly constructed building of studio apartments in Stoke. Elfin has also supplied accessible compact kitchens for five studios with wheelchair-friendly access, meeting the inclusive design requirements of the Equality Act 2010.

The new kitchens are designed and manufactured for the student accommodation market and have been installed in all Poulson House studio apartments, which are intended for students of Staffordshire and Keele Universities. The apartments are self-contained, with en-suite bathrooms and kitchen facilities. The compact units from Elfin were chosen to provide residents with dry and refrigerated food storage, as well as full cooking facilities.

The 1000mm wide Economy Plus kitchens were each supplied with an integrated refrigerator, large storage drawer, sink and drainer, tap, 20L combination microwave oven and grill, plus a built-in hotplate. In addition, eye-level cupboards have been installed to provide extra dry storage.

For the accessible apartments, the specially designed units from Elfin are 1600mm wide and feature height-adjustable worktops on sliding brackets fitted to the wall. Flexible waste connection pipes and tails on the taps - which enable the height to be changed to suit the user without breaking the connection - were also fitted. A tower unit to one side of the worktop houses a fridge and combination oven, which is set at a user-friendly height, while a pull-out shelf under the combination oven was added to allow users to rest hot items before moving them.

The principal building contractor for the Poulson House project was Kettle & Talbot. 'Poulson House was on a strict timescale in order to be delivered in time for the start of the academic year,' says site manager Craig Hancock. 'We needed to have suppliers that were flexible and reliable. Elfin Kitchens turned out to be both these things - and more.

'During the fit-out, we worked with Elfin on a phased approach, starting at the top-floor apartments and working down. This required the kitchens to be delivered in batches, on time and to a fixed schedule. Elfin made sure every kitchen arrived when it needed to and were on hand to take the products into the building, ensuring they were correctly unpacked and installed. It was an exceptional service.'

Elfin compact kitchens are durable and robust and feature a powder-coated steel construction, high-quality appliances and stainless steel taps.
